Economy, not Sarah Palin, dragged down McCain

Thanks to Karl Rove, here's a chart which shoots down the argument made by Democrats and Vichy Republicans that Sarah Palin was somehow responsible for John McCain's loss to Barack Obama in the 2008 Presidential election:

Polling Trend

Notice the bump in McCain's trend line after his running mate Sarah Palin delivered her acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention on September 3, 2008.

Note also that McCain and Palin were actually polling higher than Obama and Biden until Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson announced what he saw as the need for a massive federal bailout on September 19, 2008.

Then when McCain suspended his campaign due to what he called the "economic crisis" to go to Washington on September 24, 2008, his trend line took a serious nose dive. We wonder if there would have been a different outcome if, instead of joining the bailout bunch in the Senate,  John McCain would have taken a stand in solidarity with those House Republicans who opposed it.

So when Palin-bashers try to blame McCain's failure on Sarah Palin, show them this chart and tell them, "It was the economy, stupid."

  1. Josh, take note of the toss up category.

The debate between Palin and Bidden was on October 2nd.

A couple days prior, news was filtering out McCain was bailing out on Michigan.

That day, officially, McCain's chief strategist decided to pull out of Michigan.

I know for a fact that decision went through the rust belt states.

They would never recover. As the trend in toss ups went for Obama.

I would say that was when Palin decided to go rogue...
