Steele backs Palin on "death panels" characterization

RNC Chairman Michael Steele appeared on FNC's "Your World With Neil Cavuto" today and defended former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin's use of the term "death panels" in her comments on proposed health care legislation that is being debated across the country.

Steele also told Cavuto that the Republican Party has not stacked any town hall meetings on health care, but he accused the Democrats of busing in SEIU union members to some of the town halls. The RNC chairman also said that the Left is trying to obfuscate the fact that the American people are "ticked off" and were not being "un-american" -- as the administration has claimed -- but were being "distinctly" American.

Cavuto: "Obviously in this environment a lot of vitriol comes forth. Michael, I just wanted to get your reaction to some of it from one of your co-party members -- former Alaska Governor Palin -- who calls these panels that are going to be dispensing care and deciding it "death panels" -- that sort of thing. Is that proper? is that right?"

Steele: "Well, I think it's proper because it's within the context of what the people are seeing in some of the legislation floating around out there. when you're talking about panels that are going to be imposed that will be making life and death decisions, that will be making decisions about whether you receive health care or don't get health care, I think that's perfectly appropriate. Now how you characterize it is a matter of interpretation, but it doesn't change the fact that buried within a lot of this legislation is stuff that's fairly onerous."
