Despite bad economy, Alaskans will be paid dividends

While most other states are cutting services and laying off workers, Alaska is preparing to send dividend checks to about 657,000 of its citizens, who have their former governor and the state constitution to thank. United Press International reports:
ANCHORAGE, Ala., Sept. 10 (UPI) -- Citizens qualified to receive dividends from Alaska's Permanent Fund will receive dividends of more than $1,300 this autumn, state officials said.

The Anchorage Daily News reported that even though the $32 billion oil profits savings account lost $2.5 billion in the last fiscal year, the five-year dividend program will temper the effect of the losses for Alaskans.

[...]

Last year, Alaskans received the largest dividend checks since the state began its program in 1982. The amount was supplemented by a $1,200 resource rebate, based on the state's oil-tax surplus and initiated by former Gov. Sarah Palin.
For increasing the size of the dividend, some of Palin's detractors have ironically branded her a socialist -- which is what many of them are, but the PDS-afflicted aren't shamed by their own hypocrisy.

Truth is, the 49th state's constitution, which was written before Palin was even born, gives ownership of Alaska's natural resources to the people of the state to share. As governor, Palin was following the constitution.

  1. And Energy Stimulus is not a giving hand.

Everyone forgets how much more expensive it is to live up here and at the time gasoline, fuel oil and so on was outrageous. 4.53 was what I remember.

But our dividened has not been actually stated yet. Gov Parnell will be releasing the information at the end of Sept. 1300 is only an estimate.

And just so people understand... we don't get PAID to live up here. It is a royalty check as Alaskans are the owners of the oil and gas in Alaska.

  2. In the Middle East, Russia and other Socialist States in Latin America, THESE OIL ROYALTIES ARE COLLECTED BY THE GOVERNMENT, FOR THE GOVERNMENT.

These royalties have made kings, rulers and statist government leaders as ONE OF THE RICHEST PEOPLE IN THE WORLD, BESIDES BEING POWERFUL.

PALIN HAS MADE AN EXAMPLE ON HOW STATE-OWNED RESOURCES SHOULD BE RETURNED BACK AS DIVIDEND TO THE PEOPLE ... NOT ADDITIONAL MONEY FOR THE GOVERNMENT TO ENSLAVE THE PEOPLE.

THIS IS TRUE POPULISM AND LIBERTARIANISM WITHOUT UNDERMINING CONSERVATIVE SMALL GOVERNMENT STANCE!!!

I GIVE KUDOS TO SARAH PALIN!

  3. GTR... with due respect.

Sarah Palin had nothing to do with the PFD. She wasn't even a toddler then.

It was former Governor's Hickel and Hammond who drew up the idea and the Alaskan voters passed it.

What she did do was give Alaskans a Energy Stimulus from extra income/revenue that was interest from the oil revenues last year.

  4. Thanks Upinak. But what I'm hitting on is your last para:

"What she did do was give Alaskans a Energy Stimulus from extra income/revenue that was interest from the oil revenues last year."

The Dems and the RINOs will never give back even a portion of the royalty directly to the people and will never allow them to decide on how such money can best fit to the specific household budget.

For Dems: 100% of the royalty as additional funds for more government parastatals.

For RINOs: 100% of the royalty as additional funds to solve "tax cuts but no budget cuts/budget increase in the government".

What Palin did was populist/libertarian/conservative policy mixed into one with the Alaskans as part of the overall decision making on how the royalties shall be best address their specific problems (although the fund is supposed to be an energy stimulus during winter).

  5. GTR, we will only have that once. The Energy Stimulus was not liked by those elected.

This once was nice as I did use it on energy unlike 80% of Alaskans.
