Raising McCain

*
After strongly supporting Sarah Palin for well over a year, American Thinker has now turned against her, it seems. The fourth consecutive post either critical of Sarah Palin or negative in tone toward her appeared on AT today. It follows the meme of the latest spin against her, criticizing the former governor for her support of John McCain. There is a lot of resentment against McCain out there among conservatives. We understand that. We don't have much use for him ourselves. But we know why Sarah supports him, and it makes us respect her all the more.

Meanwhile, Gov. Palin's enemies are going wild on sites like Free Republic in a number of threads they have started, trying to bloody her up using her loyalty to McCain as a club to swing at her. They are also using her choice of which events she chooses to participate in or to skip against her. The Left and some supporters of her potential GOP opponents in a hypothetical presidential primary are always quick to seize upon any issues which divide conservatives, and they play them for all they can in the lamestream media (LSM) and on the nutroots blogs.

But, as we have stated repeatedly, anyone who doesn't understand Sarah Palin's sense of loyalty to the man, doesn't get her at all. Actually, it's about more than loyalty, unless viewed in the light of her loyalty to her own word. It's about honesty. Asked by Glenn Beck in a recent interview about why she still supports John McCain, the governor replied:
"I'm supporting him. I keep my word."
Her answer was succinct, but it speaks volumes about the strength of her character. Sarah Palin is such a good and decent person that her word is her solemn bond. She doesn't turn her back on those she has promised to stand with. Now, in a politician, this is indeed such a rare quality that many of her critics just can't manage to wrap their little minds around it. Sarah Palin is the polar opposite of Barack Obama, who has managed to break nearly every promise he made on his way to the White House.

The know-it-alls who are slamming Sarah for supporting McCain are pronouncing this as her Waterloo, the death of her political career. Heh. We wish we had a dollar for every time some self-styled expert said she was political toast. If we did, we wouldn't need a tip jar on this blog (which, dear reader, you are free to hit whenever you feel like we have earned a modest donation).

Actually, if she makes a couple of cameo appearances for McCain in Phoenix in March, sends the old guy some SarahPAC money and then manages to avoid getting hit by any stray punches thrown between McCain and his primary challenger J.D. Hayworth, we don't think that she will be hurt that much. Surely supporting McCain will be less damaging than deserting his ship like a rat, an act for which she would be eviscerated by her critics. We can see the headlines now -- "Palin Quits McCain" -- atop articles which would mercilessly pound her for betraaaaying the man who pulled her out of the Alaskan wilderness and gave her a national platform to stand on. You don't need to be a visionary to get the picture.

Sarah Palin's greatest political gift may be her uncanny ability to make decisions which at first appear to be very bad career moves, but over time she somehow manages to turn to her advantage. She has a history of defiance of the CW, and even her opponents have admitted that her political instincts nearly always wind up serving her well over the long run.

Frankly, it defies explanation. It's not something one can be taught or just learn from the school of hard knocks. It appears to be something of a sixth sense which not many politicians seem to possess. This God-given gift is made all the more remarkable because though she is really quite politically ambitious, she can go on with a smile on her face even if she never holds public office again. Unlike with other politicians, her ambition is not all-consuming, and she will not break her word bond to feed it. Her priorities are God, family, love of country, love of Alaska, and her various causes (our troops, the sanctity of innocent human life, special needs families, etc.) -- in that order. Everything else just has to go down further on the list below those five. She summed it up best when she paraphrased scripture, saying, "If I die, I die."

We used to think that she was eying a 2012 White House run, and she may well be. But we wouldn't be at all surprised if she is patiently waiting for 2020, when she will be only 56 years old. Why not let Romney, Pawlenty or whoever the GOP establishment candidate turns out to be, fight it out with Huckabee or some unforeseen candidate on the right in '12? She can avoid the bloodletting. Meanwhile, she can prove that she's a good team player and will build up some serious cred with the party establishment and with the key players in this game -- independent voters -- as well. We wouldn't be all that shocked even if she challenges Mark Begich in 2014 for the Senate (a term which would conveniently expire in 2020) or gets appointed Energy Secretary if a Republican wins.

Whatever she chooses to do, it will likely surprise everyone, and she will be severely criticized for it by the chaterati. Eventually, she will come out of it smelling like a rose. How many times has she been pronounced politically dead and rebounded to prove the experts wrong? The Arctic Fox must be part Arctic Cat. She always lands on her feet.

  1. Josh, for the record, I am TOTALLY ON BOARD with every word you say here. Thank you so much for taking the time to do this. I'm going to repost this on the Palin Twibe blog and at Mommy, too. I don't think you will mind? I know you're busy, so I'll put it over at the Twibe blog, but also at Mommy because this has to be read by as many as possible. It tells everything that needs to be said. Thank you, my brother. God bless you and God bless Sarah Palin.

  2. Jim Robinson, founder of Free Republic, posted there a few days ago on his total support for Gov. Palin. You probably read it, but just in case you missed it, it's well worth reading:

    http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-backroom/2424184/posts?page=394#394

The same thing is going on over at Team Sarah, many are all PO'd.

We've seen this before by probably the same crowd. They objected to her going on 0prah, the objected to her being interviewed by Babawawa, they sure objected when she resigned, and heaven forbid when she named a pro-abortion person to the AK Supreme Court when she had the choice between 2 pro-abortion people. Every little thing is seized upon to try and drag her down, but she's almost like Teflon, nothing really sticks, and she just gracefully jumps over all the hurdles put in her way.

  3. Josh, Absolutely Superb! I wish I had your way with words, but I know I am in lock step with you on this issue for sure. Will try to push it around the net as best I can.

  4. I find it very interesting how some of this is like the Spanish Inquisition...
but how about another topic, the Tea Party Convention.
remember how much crap was being spewed over the blogs over the previous week or so about the guy who was running it, how he was probably a crook and was just in it to steal the money... all the gnashing of teeth about how Sarah Palin was going to taint her image by going to this den of thieves and pretenders? remember all that?

Well, now that Judicial Watch has become a sponsor... what do we have? Absolute SILENCE.... can hear a pin drop.

My my, could it be that there were enemies of Sarah Palin spreading some of the crap? Could it be that some on the right might have other fish to fry as in wanting the money for themselves? or wanting to control the Tea Party movement themselves? or was it jealousy that this guy thought of putting on a Convention before they did?

Sure is quiet now.... and just to make sure, I assume all of you know who Judicial Watch is... right? the non-partisan public interest group that investigates and prosecutes government corruption... do you really think they would be a sponsor if things were that screwy with the Convention?

Sarah Palin know what she is doing... all of us are just on for the ride. And what a ride it is going to be.... like she said when asked about leaving Governorship and striking out..... "If I die, I die"

  6. 1. It's not like McCain is an America-hating ultra-Leftist. But enough about Obama.

    2. I disagree on your 2020 over 2012 hypothesis. For her, it's 2012 or never.

    3. "Sarah Palin's greatest political gift may be her uncanny ability to make decisions which at first appear to be very bad career moves, but over time she somehow manages to turn to her advantage. That's the best paragraph I've read since this whole thing started. Thanks!

  7. Josh good article but one point I would disagree with you. Sarah is not politically ambitious and that is why the left and even the right misunderstand some of her actions. Sarah makes decisions based on doing the right thing, period. I believe even if she knew ahead a time that a particular decision that was of major importance to her would end all hope of a political career, she would still make it. This is the remarkable quality of Sarah. Sarah isn't politically ambitious she feels she's called. It is a day and night difference between the two.

  8. Very good analysis, especially:
"Sarah Palin's greatest political gift may be her uncanny ability to make decisions which at first appear to be very bad career moves, but over time she somehow manages to turn to her advantage".

..and to the advantage of advancing (not just in principle but realistically) conservative policies.

  9. Just curious, Tommygun, but what exactly has Sarah Palin said or done to form your opinion that "For her, it's 2012 or never"?

If there is something I missed here, I'd like to know.

  10. Lee, one of the definitions of "ambition" provided by Webster is "desire to achieve a particular end" -- and this is precisely what I meant when I wrote that she is ambitious.

By virtue of the fact that she wants to see this Republic become more true to what was envisioned by its founders, she is ambitious. If she believes that she can honorably do anything to make that happen, she will do so, even if it involves personal sacrifice on her part.

  12. Great post Josh. How many times do we have to keep reminding ourselves to trust her instincts? (It's a rhetorical question) You would think that she has already proven herself. But for many (if not all) of us, we just haven't seen anyone like her.

  13. My tentative hypothesis is that AT's writers are somehow CPAC partisans, and that this will go on until CPAC haa their convention and all then return home for one sustained whine about all-things-Sarah. And if the tea parties can be split into good guys, fake guys, for-profit guys and the red-blooded guys, all the better. After all, imagine all the blog posts, punditry, blah-blah-blah. Whole careers can be had. In fact, maybe someone is on a retainer right now.

    Gee, whoocooouldatbeeee? Whoooowooouldosuchathing?

  14. Josh - for the past two weeks I feel like I am living in "Bizzaro World". (For those of you too young to understand the reference look it up on Wikipedia).

First, we have the Mass. Right to Life, Susan B. Anthony List and Team Sarah supporters cheering on to victory a candidate who sees nothing wrong with killing children during their first six months of life in the womb and who was a former nude male model (maybe Levi Johnston is Scott Brown's love child). At the same time, these same people are condeming Sarah for endorsing McCain who has been a strong pro life advocate his entire career.

Second, we see conservative critics of Obamacare adulating a candidate who voted for and still supports Romneycare - an almost identical plan to Obamacare - which unconstitutionally requires people to purchase insurance and is bankrupting the state. These same people however, want to throw Sarah under the bus for endorsing McCain - even though their new "love interest" - Scott Brown - is doing robocalls in Arizona supporting McCain.

Third, we see a staunch conservative like Sen. Tom Coburn endorse McCain protege Carly Fiorina in California instead of Chuck DeVore - and there isn't a peep out of conservatives. However, Sarah is permanently condemned to be a RINO for endorsing McCain.

Fourth, we have the gold standard in conservative politicians - Dick Cheney - endorsing RINO and pro choice Kay Bailey Hutchison over "10th amendment and pro life" Rick Perry for Texas governor. But that's OK with conservatives because everyone knows that the two of them are long time friends, so Cheney gets a pass. However, Sarah must be burned at the stake for supporting the man who brought her to national prominence.

Sixth, we have Dick Armey, the man who helped to finance the Tea Party movement through his Freedom Works - a true Tea Partier if there ever was one - also endorsing long time Washington establishment insider and RINO Kay Bailey Hutchison over Rick Perry. Any outcry from conservatives or Tea Partiers over that? No, but Sarah's a traitor to the cause for endorsing McCain.

I could go on and on, but I think you get the message. Bizzaro world!

  15. Josh, as usually, you make a very well reasoned case. Thanks!

    Here's my two cents:

The same people who are horribly upset by this decision to campaign for McCain should also have gotten upset that Sarah chose to run with McCain. I know Sarah was largely unknown until the VP selection, but once people heard about how conservative her values are compared to McCain's, they should have been upset that she was "compromising" these values to run with McCain. Were these people upset then? No, they were thrilled!

I understand that people may not like this decision, but she could in no way make the right decision regarding this. If she chose not to support him, she would have caught a lot of flack for that. While I don't support everything McCain stands for, I think she made the right decision.

  16. I said this was going to happen. It seems that some conservatives don't care about loyalty all that much. They want Sarah Palin to go against her nature and be a backstabbing, self serving politician. I guess I have a bone to pick with conservatives who only have surface support for Palin as long as she's a "good little soldier" and do what they want. I've said before that I'm not a fan of McCain by any stretch, but I don't hold any angst against Palin for stomping for him. I respect Sarah's sense of loyalty to a person she deems a friend. At least now Sarah knows who her real allies on the right are and those who just want to shape her into their image of the perfect, opportunist conservative.

  17. I had very little political attraction to John McCain, strictly in terms of policy, when he ran in 08. Sarah Palin was THE reason I went down to the Republican Victory Center day after day and made cold-calls to constituents, and I can vouch for the fact that almost everyone who passed through the Center during the weeks leading up to the election were galvanized solely due to Sarah Palin. Believe me, I made it a point to ask people.

At the same time, I believe beyond a shadow of doubt that McCain is a man of personal character and integrity, a genuine American hero, etc. These attributes are not negligible, even though I think he is pursuing flawed policy, and flawed tactics as a Republican legislator. That does not doom him as a man, nor as a potentially more effective conservative in the future (let us hope).

Sarah could very easily have come-up with an excuse to avoid campaigning with McCain, but she is, as noted, a woman of her word, and let me tell you: when she says it and backs it up, that sort of old-fashioned conviction is worth more than all the teleprompted bulls&#t in the world. I admire a public servant that keeps an honorable promise (especially in this chaos), and I'll add one more thing: When/If Sarah Palin says in 2011 that she will do her best, her utmost, to cut government down to size, lift tax burdens on small business to create jobs, and make America energy independent once she's in the White House, I will BELIEVE her.

That, friends, is practically a miracle.

  18. Alot of the so called conervative blogs are really after ratings and are in it for themselves. Thats why I like this blog and Conservatives for Palin and some others because they are with Sarah to the end.
