Steve Schmidt talks Gov. Palin with Hugh Hewitt

McCain senior campaign strategist Steve Schmidt was Hugh Hewitt's guest on his talk show Monday night, and among the questions he was asked were several having to do with his boss' former running mate. Schmidt said that he, unlike most Sarah Palin's supporters, considered her treatment by ABC's Charlie Gibson and CBS' Katie Couric to be fair, although he did admit that overall, she was treated unfairly by "a lot of the media" during the campaign.

When Schmidt was asked why McCain staffers waited so long to allow Gov. Palin to appear on conservative radio talk shows, environment which would be friendly to the governor, Schmidt said that she delivered "one of the great convention speeches of the last generation by a candidate of either party," Team McCain kept her away from the talk show circuit to "build suspense."

In Schmidt's opinion, the McCain campaign staff "served her well." yes, we all noticed how well-served Gov. Palin was by the leaked lies that she didn't know that Africa was a continent and couldn't name the member countries of NAFTA, even though she had to know at least two of the three to handle the trade negotiations she concluded with Canadian company Trans Canada for a major gas pipeline deal.

When Hewitt asked Schmidt if he had to do it over again, would he still pick Gov. Palin, Schmidt reminded the talk show host that it was John McCain who ultimately made the decision to choose her:
"Well, Senator McCain made the pick. I…and it’s been reported that I was a, that I was an advocate of it, and I was. And politically, I believe it was the right thing to do in the time. [...] But no, I don’t regret it, and I still believe electorally, her pick helped the Senator in the election. And I think that when you look at all the things that we had stacked up against us, I believe it was the right pick to make, politically, still."

  1. Schmidt ran probably the lousiest compaigns in history. The only thing he did that was any good at all was the celebrity ads after 0bama returned from Europe. It was all down hill from there. Palin well served by the McCain staff? Give us a break. How on earth can he sit there and say something like that? Of course, he was part of that staff, and they were, and are his friends, so whatever shortcomings the campaign had are blamed on Palin. I hope none of those people are allowed to work in anyone's campaign again, they proved themselves not only inept but dishonest as well.

Stupid, stupid idea. She was riding high after that outstanding speech and should've been let out across the nation doing interviews left and right. Instead they hid her away put all their chips on 2 freakin' interviews. God almighty what a dumbass thing to do. Had she given more interviews then the bad performance in the Couric interview wouldn't have seemed so damaging. You could've chalked it up to a bad day. Instead her critics used it to flog her. Stupid Schmidt. And now you're out of work.

  3. So Schmidt thinks that the Couric and Gibson interviews were fair? I believe that statement is certainly debatable but what they did in editing the interviews was downright unfair. Mark Levin posted the original answers in the Gibson interview and it was significantly altered. Sarah said in John Ziegler's "Media Malpractice" that when Katie Couric kept coming after her about the abortion issue, that she knew that Katie was just playing the gotcha game and the interview went downhill from there. Sarah was also horrified to hear what Brian Williams had to say immediately following her RNC speech in which he essentially gave a call to arms to the media to take her down. And she wondered out loud to Ziegler why the McCain team allowed Williams to interview her. So no , I do not think Schmidt and the McCain team served her well at all.
