Poetic Justice: Conde Nast Portfolio FAIL

Remember Portfolio, the supposedly business magazine that Conde Nast sank $100 million into? No, I didn't think you would. Here's a link to refresh your memory.

Yes, that Portfolio. Nicholas Carlson of Business Insider reports that the venture is down the tubes, and Portfolio is history. Carlson says the problem was that the editors could not stay on topic. In the midst of a major financial collapse, the magazine was printing vicious attack pieces on Sarah Palin, when it should have been examining the economic trends responsible for the recession and discussing strategies for business survival.

The FAIL, although not Epic, is just another little sign that using expensive resources for hate propaganda instead of running a business like it's a business is not a winning proposition.

  1. It figured that by running its hit piece on Palin it would be rewarded, but instead, Portfolio got what it deserved. Matter of fact, most media outlets who have made it their business to destroy Palin are gasping for air, NY Times, Time, Newsweek, AP, MSNBC, even CNN isn't doing so well, the big 3 networks, and the LA Times (although the LAT has over the last few months run a lot more sympathetic stories about Palin than before, maybe they realize something the others don't.)

  2. It happens that this magazine was in my arthritis doctor's office. The main attraction to me was the pictures of Governor Palin not wearing glasses. It seemed strange that they published such an attractive picture of Governor Palin with such a nasty article about her. I guess they were using her picture to sale magazines.
