Whether it's some nut throwing a shoe at George Bush, a paperback at President Obama or tomatoes at Sarah Palin (karmic justice: the flying veggies missed her and instead hit police officers at a book signing event), assaults on public figures are no laughing matter. But death threats are far more disturbing, not to mention dangerous. Excerpts follow from a post by Diane Suffern at Hot Air's Green Room:

While the image of something nearly sailing over an oblivious Obama’s head arouses immature giggling in some (read: me), we certainly should take these incidents seriously and protect public officials at all costs. Most people harbor no ill intentions, but it only takes one deranged person to inflict maximum harm—and they only have to be successful once.

Sarah Palin has received her share of threats from maniacal individuals, the most recent (and curiously underreported) being a death threat prior to speaking at the Combat Vets for Congress fundraiser last Saturday.

While part of her appeal is her endearing willingness to engage everyone she meets, she needs vigilant security from now on. I don’t think this will inhibit her much, though. If anyone can still reach out to others beyond a tight security detail, it’s Sarah Palin.

Gov. Palin addresses combat veterans fundraiser under heavy security in San Diego

According to KFMB-TV, when Sarah Palin took the stage at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel and Marina at a combat veterans fundraiser just after 8 p.m. local time Saturday night, there was extra security present because of a reported death threat against her.

The San Diego Union Tribune reported on its Sign On San Diego website that a large crowd of supporters and journalists gathered in a ballroom to hear her introduce fellow Alaskan and candidate for the U.S. Senate Joe Miller:

Palin, standing in front of a row of American flags on stage, took shots at what she called the "lamestream media," saying, that when the media "just doesn't get it and when they don't believe what perhaps your message is so they want to belittle you and mock you and treat you with much disdain, you know, I think, well they can do that to me, that's fine, because I know truth."

She went on, "You know what, you can say whatever you want to say about me but I raised a combat vet and you can't take that away from me."

The event was organized by the political action committee Combat Veterans for Congress. Tickets cost $300 and up per person, and about 500 people were expected to attend the event, titled "Patriotic Gala." Among the local congressional candidates attending were Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Alpine, and Republican congressional candidates Nick Popaditch, who is running in the 51st District, and Michael Crimmins, who is running in the 53rd district.

Organizers said they were told Palin did not want to overshadow Miller at the event, but it was clear many were there to see her. A threat against her life before the event caused organizers to increase their focus on security.

Combat Veterans for Congress Chairman Joseph John said at a news conference that his PAC was "very concerned about about her security." Before the threat was reportedly made, the hotel had already arranged security for the event, according to Sheraton manager Warren Nocon.

Commenters are encouraging violence against Sarah Palin, her husband and children on two liberal websites. At one leftist sewer site, a commenter suggests to the man with a shotgun who threatened Gov. Palin and was slapped with a restraining order this week to use an AR-15 instead, "If you're going after the breeding pair and the whole litter."

While the lamestram media has been filling the airwaves with their reports of faux racism and imagined threats of violence, Patterico uncovered some real and chilling death threats. Warning - the language is harsh and the message is, at the very least, disturbing:

While the leftist media attack dogs are busy barking up the wrong tree, Ron Devito points to where the real threats and demonstrated violence are coming from:

During the health care town hall meetings, it was SEIU thugs and Obama’s people who committed acts of violence. During the McCain-Palin 2008 campaign, Joanne – a friend I campaigned with – was routinely called a four-letter word that roughly rhymes with “country” and was twice nearly physically attacked for her support of Gov. Palin. The perpetrators of these acts? Obama supporters. Joanne also bore witness to an Obama supporter attacking someone campaigning for the McCain-Palin side.

Leftists talk trash about the TEA Party and 912 movements. “They’re fomenting violence,” leftists scream. Number of violent acts committed by TEA Party and 912 members? None. Number of politicians shot at by members of the TEA Party movement? None. Number of death threats made by TEA Partiers? None. The other leftist canard regarding the TEA Party movement is “racism.” Leftists proclaim loudly, “they hate Obama, because he’s black.” I have news for you: our issues with Obama have absolutely nothing to do with race or color. We find his policies repugnant, worthless, disgraceful, and contemptible, just like Jimmy Carter’s. Unlike the leftists; however, we are addressing our issues via legal means and doing it the American way. It’s leftists who acting out of blind hatred wanted President Bush assassinated. Now they’re after the entire Palin family.

Take action! E-mail Patterico's post to every local and national media outlet and ask them to prove that their coverage is balanced by reporting these threats on Gov. Palin and her family. If you're a person of faith, pray that God protect Sarah Palin and her family to keep them safe from any harm and evil. And this time, we have no qualms about asking Gov. Palin and her team for one small favor -- please beef up your security detail. Finally, we call upon MSNBC to restrain the likes of Ed Schultz, Chris Matthews, Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow. They have incited too many unhinged leftists toward violence already. It's well past time for them to back away from their dangerous narrative of hate.

This is deadly serious. It's dangerous, and it must end now.
