Sarah Still Steadfastly Supports Steele

*
Last night on 'Hannity,' host Sean Hannity asked Sarah Palin if there was a split in the Republican Party between her and Chairman Michael Steele. Her reply:
"I support Michael Steele. I am glad that he is the leader of the party, administratively. If those within the party are choosing to go in different directions, his term is up in eight months, and they can vote somebody else in. I think he's doing a great job. Michael Steele is an outsider. The machine, I think, is tough to penetrate. I know that Michele [Bachmann] and I both have kind of felt that in our careers. I think it's been good to have an independent outsider trying to create some change in the Republican Party."
Real Clear Politics has the video clip here.

Politico reported last week that Gov. Palin had asked the RNC to stop advertising that she would attend an RNC fundraiser being held in conjunction with the Southern Republican Leadership Conference.

This is a smart answer on Gov. Palin's part. She stood her ground and didn't allow RNC to use her to promote a function she was not taking part in. But by publicly showing her support for Steele, she proved once again to GOP insiders that she can be a team player. It would be foolish for her to call for Steele's scalp, as that would only play into the hands of the Democrats. If Steele can mange to come out on top of his situation, he will owe her big time. Finally, she's correct in that Steele's term will expire in a few months time, so it would serve only the Democrats' purposes to try to oust him now, even if she had lost confidence in him.

Recall that Ronald Reagan never publicly disclosed his real opinions of either Gerald Ford or George H. W. Bush, but he didn't think that highly of either man. Sarah Palin is wisely following both the Gipper's example and his eleventh commandment.

Elephants On The Bayou: An SRLC Preview:

*
Our friends at US for Palin will be live streaming Gov. Palin's SRLC speech here:

US for Palin contributor Adrienne Ross will be live blogging from the event in New Orleans also at Motivation Truth. Both websites are part of the Blogs 4 Palin blogging community.

And according to Taegan Goddard, C-SPAN will be cablecasting the entire event.

Mark Barabak at the LA Times has a preview of the four-day conference:
When Republican activists gather in New Orleans for three days of strategizing and speeches starting Thursday, one big attraction will present a big question: Is Sarah Palin angling for the party's 2012 presidential nomination?

The former Alaska governor will join several other possible White House contenders addressing 3,000 or so party loyalists at the Southern Republican Leadership Conference. Also appearing are former House Speaker Newt Gingrich of Georgia; Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour; former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum; and, by video, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty.

[...]

Her appearance will be one of a growing number of political speeches Palin has given since leaving the governor's office, publishing a best-seller and launching herself as a TV personality. The question is whether Friday's appearance is a step toward a White House run, or simply another marketing effort -- not that one necessarily precludes the other.

"It helps her celebrity," said David Carney, a GOP strategist attending the conference. "It also exposes her to 50, 60, 100 people from different states who will go back to their Republican Central Committee meetings . . . or the steering committees for various candidates . . . and say, 'We need to get Gov. Palin out here for our Lincoln Day dinner, or let's have a rally and invite her.'"
His full piece is here, and it comes with the usual lamestream media bias warning.

Elsewhere in the LSM, David Chalian of ABC News poses the question that the Romney and Pawlenty teams must have pondered:
"If Sarah Palin, with her mega-wattage superstar status sucking up all the available oxygen in the room, is it worth sharing a stage and competing for some attention?"
Ed Morrissey, who will be in New Orleans to report on the convention, sees this as a test for Gov. Palin:
"The test may not be of her as much as it is of her intent. If she decides to run, she would be formidable, with a large base of passionate supporters. So far, though, she has mainly signaled an interest in activism and in expanding her media reach. The SRLC may give a clearer idea what she has planned for the next two years."
In her SRLC speech Friday, Sarah Palin is expected to specifically address President Obama’s energy policy. At The Cypress Times, John Winder suggests the governor's address in New Orleans "may very well be her act of throwing down the gauntlet to officially challenge the status quo thus setting the stage for a dramatic 2012 election."

The Washington Post's newest blogger Dave Weigel has a post up that looks at some of the pre-conference maneuvering going on regarding the SRLC straw poll. Weigel reported last month that the Ronulans snapped up 800 tickets for the event to make sure their guy gets the long straw in the poll.

Open Left blogger Chris Bowers:
"Anyone who can draw 10,000 people to a rally in Minnesota--in early 2010, no less-- is formidable. In the specific case of Sarah Palin, it makes her virtually unstoppable... A continually weak economy--which is very possible--could actually make her President less than three years from now."

Roars of approval for 'Bachmann-Palin Overdrive'

*
GOP rock stars Sarah Palin and Rep. Michele Bachmann shared the stage at the Minneapolis Convention Center Wednesday afternoon as a crowd of 11,000 roared its approval. The Star Tribune's Bob Von Sternberg reports that Gov. Palin was there to help Congresswoman Bachmann in her campaign for another two-year term in the U.S. House representing Minnesota's Sixth District:
"Let's do the rest of the nation a favor and keep her in Congress," Palin said.

"Let me ask you, Minnesota, do you love your freedom?" Palin boomed to a rapturous response.

She got an equally loud response when she asked, "are there any Tea Party Americans here today?" She called the Tea Party movement "a beautiful grassroots movement sweeping across the country ... The Tea Party is growing and steaming" having enlisted "people who are deeply concerned about the path our country is on."

Referring to campaign appearances during the 2008 campaign, including her debut at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Palin said, "I love being here because you all sound like me -- or I sound like you."

Referring to one of President Obama's biggest gaffes on the campaign trail, Palin said she imagined that "some of you are probably proud to cling to your guns and religion."

Palin and Bachmann hit the stage about 2:45 p.m to an explosive roar of approval and stood before a massive American flag, facing a sea of waving blue Bachmann campaign signs.

GOP officials said they handed out more than 11,000 free tickets and ticket holders began streaming into the hall two hours before the 2 p.m. event began.

Noting the turnout, Bachmann shouted, "take that liberals!" Speaking of the upcoming midterm election, "there is hope, there is change -- real change coming to this country this November."
As one of our readers commented, they should have named this rally "Bachmann-Palin Overdrive." Someone at the WSJ must have been reading his mind.

Here's the video of Gov. Palin's speech:

Update: More coverage from Politico, AP, MinnPost, MPR, CBS News, CNN and Washington Post.

It's the biggest bleeping deal in the Midwest today

*
As our esteemed vice president would say, "It's a big [bleep]ing deal." The Minnesota Republican Party has handed out all 10,000 of its tickets for today's Michele Bachmann - Sarah Palin rally that promises to rock the Minneapolis Convention Center.

The doors will open at noon, and the party gets started at 2 p.m. local time, which coincides nicely with Sean Hannity's radio program to be broadcast live from the Convention Center. Rep Bachmann will also be streaming the event live on her website here. The Congresswoman says:
"It’s an exciting time to be a conservative in this country right now, and I encourage you all to stay engaged and keep up the fight! Let’s send a message to Washington this November that Obama, Reid, and Pelosi won’t ever forget!"
Oh, yes, some guy named "Tim" will be there also:
"Pawlenty, one could say, is the odd man out here. He's not as aggressive in his conservatism as Palin or Bachmann--he's been a Sam's Club conservative, so they say, as governor--but he has presented his conservative credentials to the broader political audience, and he has looked to slash spending from Minnesota's budget, which the 2012 GOP primary electorate will like. So maybe he's the odd man out in a room with Palin and Bachmann, but not quite a sore thumb."
With Michele Bachmann and Sarah Palin together on the same stage, Shannon Bell wonders:
"Is there enough duct tape in the entire state of Minnesota to keep liberal brains from simultaneously exploding?"

[...]

"Both are strong, conservative women who have turned the political world on its head in the last couple of years. Bachmann and Palin have both served as democratic lightning rods in the last several months for being outspoken advocates of conservatism and anti-big government."
At 4:30 p.m., Gov. Palin will host a fundraiser for Rep. Bachmann at the Minneapolis Hilton. Entry-level tickets for the late afternoon event went for $500, with serious donors shelling out up to $10,000 for a table for ten at an exclusive "private reception with photo opportunity."

Update: CNN may also live stream the event here (h/t: Free Republic), and the Star Tribune says it will stream it here.

Modesto Bee: Valley GOP backs Sarah Palin visit

*
State Sen. Leland Yee, a Democrat from San Francisco, has been trying to make political hay out of Sarah Palin's scheduled June visit to California State University, Stanislaus, where the university's nonprofit foundation signed her to speak at the school's 50th anniversary celebration. Yee says the foundation should disclose Gov. Palin's speaking fee, although the terms of her Washington Speakers Bureau contract with the foundation explicitly states that the fee is not to be disclosed.

Now the Modesto Bee reports that four GOP state lawmakers have jumped into the fray on Sarah Palin's side:
State Sens. Jeff Denham of Atwater and Dave Cogdill of Modesto with Assemblymen Tom Berryhill of Modesto and Bill Berryhill of Ceres wrote a letter to CSU Chancellor Charles Reed praising the foundation for bringing Palin to campus.

The foundation is charged with raising money to support the school, and it's technically not part of the university.

"As the old adage goes, sometimes it takes money to make money. The sold out (with a waiting list) event that features former Gov. Sarah Palin as the keynote speaker for the 50th Anniversary Celebration was clearly a stroke of marketing genius; one that will clearly help fund student scholarships and other campus activities," the lawmakers wrote.
Welcome to the party, guys.

10,000 tickets to Palin-Bachman rally distributed

*
All 10,000 tickets for Wednesday's GOP rally featuring U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann and former Gov. Sarah Palin Wednesday have been distributed, and there are no more, says the Minnesota Republican Party. That 10,000 figure doesn't include however many tickets were counterfeited by "progressive" criminals. Doors to the Minneapolis Convention Center open at Noon, and the rally will start at 2 p.m.

According to the Minneapolis (Red) Star Tribune:
Palin and Bachmann will address the crowd, as will Gov. Tim Pawlenty and other Republican glitterati. Conservative media star Sean Hannity will be on hand to sign his new book and do his television show from the convention center.

The rally tickets were free. Tickets to the afternoon fundraiser cost $500, with prices skyrocketing to $10,000 for a "private reception with photo opportunity." Couples who shelled out $10,000 also got to fill a table for 10 at the Minneapolis Hilton.

Bachmann's re-election campaign will get the first $4,800 of any money donated from an individual. Cash gifts beyond that will go to the state GOP.

Allahpundit wonders what he's missing. A brain, perhaps?

*
Good Lord, even by Allahpundit's standards, this is stupid: The unable-to-think-clearly half of Hot Air's blogging duo wants Sarah Palin to endorse the legalization of marijuana. What could possibly go wrong?

Sheesh, it's not like people today can think clearly as it is -- just look at who they elected in 2008. So let's encourage them to light up and get even more stupid. Holy hemp, Batman, if they smoke enough weed, they may be able to think as clearly as Andrew Sullivan, Matt Damon and Allahpundit!

Somehow we don't believe that legalizing drugs that rot the brain is real high on the list of the concerns of American families. They're more worried about jobs, Obamacare, jobs, rising energy prices, jobs, a nuclear Iran, jobs, Grampa and Grandma's nursing home bills, jobs, taxes... and did we mention jobs? Nice to know AP has his priorities in order. But he has a job, although we can't for the life us us figure out why he's allowed to keep it.

Sigh.

Oh, and fyi to Allah and the pro-pot group in Nevada, Sarah Palin is on the record as saying that she doesn’t support fully legalizing marijuana because she thinks it would send the wrong message to kids. As far as medical marijuana is concerned, Gov. Palin told National Review, “I’m not going to get in the way of a doctor prescribing something that he or she believes will help a cancer patient.” She believes that meth is a greater threat than pot and should have a higher priority for law enforcement.

Sarah Palin speech a hot ticket for Oregon Republicans

*
The Eugene, Oregon Register-Guard reports that Sarah Palin’s appearance in Eugene this month has sold out, so the Lane County GOP has added a $100 pay-per-view option for those who want to watch the former governor's keynote address, but were not able to get tickets:
The Lane County Republican Central Committee has sold all of its $250 tickets for dinner and Palin’s speech on April 23 at the 750-person capacity Hilton Eugene main hall. Ticket purchasers include some of Eugene’s biggest business names, plus at least two Oregon gubernatorial hopefuls.

According to campaign finance disclosures, Lane County Republicans are on track to gross at least $188,000 on the event — a portion of which will pay for Palin’s speaking fees, hotel bills, food and other expenses, said Whaanga Kewene, coordinator for the event, which is called the Lincoln Day Dinner.

“It is exceeding our expectations,” he said, noting that local Republicans began working to bring Palin to Eugene last fall. Since then, she has published a memoir, made several high-profile tea party movement appearances, and last week launched a show on Fox News.

“Her popularity has excelled since we started this planning process. That makes a big difference,” Kewene said.

[...]

Although the party appears to be financially ahead already after selling out the Hilton’s main hall, the party could pad its fundraising totals if it sells all 280 tickets available to watch Palin’s speech on a big video screen.

Tickets include a social hour that begins at 5 p.m. and dinner at 6:45 p.m.
As with all events where Gov. Palin speaks, cell phones, cameras and recording devices are not permitted, a stipulation insisted on by her booking agent, the Washington Speakers Bureau.

USSA Condemns Anti-Hunting Group’s Attacks on Gov. Palin

*
A news release from the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance should be of special interest to Sarah Palin's supporters:
(Columbus) – The U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance (USSA) is one of numerous groups that are condemning the latest public relations smear campaign by the animal rights group Defenders of Wildlife targeting former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin.

Defender’s has sent out numerous e-mail pleas to its membership asking that they contact Discovery Communications Inc., the parent company of the popular Discovery and Animal Planet channels, and urge it to drop a proposed new documentary to be called “Sarah Palin’s Alaska” in which the former governor will star.

The Defender’s campaign largely rests on a gross mischaracterization of then Alaska Gov. Palin’s wolf management plan and recycled outrage at her opposition to designating polar bears as “threatened” under the Endangered Species Act (ESA).

According to the Defender’s website, over 125,000 people have signed an online petition the group intends to forward to Discovery’s CEO David Zaslav.

The USSA has stood up against Defender’s before when the group used the wolf issue during fundraising appeals in 2009. At that time, the USSA and several other leading conservation groups sent a letter to Gov. Palin outlining support for the policy.

The USSA stands by this letter as an accurate representation of the policy. It clarifies that the Alaska program avoids game population decimation, especially for moose and caribou “through a rigorously controlled, scientifically based system.” To view the full letter, Click Here [PDF].

The USSA also shares Gov. Palin’s concerns over the ESA designation of polar bears as endangered. That decision was based largely on an unverifiable 50 year projection of what could happen as a result of global warming.

“Once again, Defender’s of Wildlife have chosen to engage in misleading emotional appeals in order to tarnish the reputation of Gov. Palin,” said Bud Pidgeon, USSA president and CEO. “Whatever one’s politics, Gov. Palin should not be falsely accused of being anti-conservation when her actions were in concert with wildlife management professionals and verifiable science.”

Take Action! Sportsmen can let Discovery Communications know that they support their production of “Sarah Palin’s Alaska” by writing a letter to David Zaslav.

Inform him that Gov. Palin is regarded as a conservationist by those inside and outside the wildlife management community and the rhetoric coming from Defender’s reflects an unscientific, emotional appeal. It fails to take into account the science supporting the wolf management program in Alaska as well as the lack of science used to place the polar bear on the endangered species list.

Mr. Zaslav can be reached at:

We urge Palin supporters, including those who aren't active in hunting or shooting sports, to join in the USSA's defense of Gov. Palin and write letters and emails to David Zaslav at Discovery along the guidelines recommended in the news release.

Sarah Palin Hearts Texas

*
Sarah Palin isn't kidding when she tells crowds in our state how much she loves Texas. At least when it comes to the number of personal appearances the former Alaska governor has made and will make, the Lone Star State has racked up far and away more "wins" than any other state in the union.

On December 4 last year, Gov. Palin's Going Rogue book tour stopped in Plano and at Fort Hood, near Killeen, TX. She campaigned for Rick Perry February 7 in Cypress, just twenty miles northwest of Downtown Houston, where she appeared the following day for a Get Motivated! seminar. On March 25, she was in East Texas for a Beaumont Get Motivated! seminar in the morning and by afternoon was in West Texas for two events in Midland.

Gov. Palin will be back in Houston for a Barbara Bush Celebration of Reading April 22. She's booked for appearances in support of life-affirming organizations in Austin April 29 and in Dallas April 30. She is booked for the Oil Palace in Tyler June 26 and has an event scheduled in Waco September 14.

That's eleven appearances in the Lone Star State by our count, nearly twice as many as she's made and is scheduled to make in any other state. She's made six appearances in Florida and four in Arizona, with another one scheduled. Of the four largest Texas cities, only San Antonio has not yet hosted an event with Sarah Palin.

Amy Siskind doesn't understand Sarah Palin

*
Amy Siskind is a feminist who has in the past written positively of Sarah Palin, but in her latest commentary reveals that she doesn't "get" Gov. Palin at all:
Neither party is going to bestow their 2012 nomination on a woman simply because it is time to do this for our country. The Democratic National Committee had this opportunity in 2008 when Hillary Clinton was betrayed by the ever-present boys club. If voters want to get a woman into the White House, it is time to stop using a shoehorn and start using a sledgehammer.

Sarah Palin alone can wield this tool. Having resigned as governor, she no longer answers to the Republican National Committee. In fact, as the de facto leader of the up-and-coming Tea Party movement, the Republican Party answers to her. That is, if the Republicans hope to avoid what Dan Quayle describes as letting the Tea Party go Perot. If they hope to pull off a victory in 2012, they need Palin. And if Palin wants the White House, she needs to earn the votes of the disenfranchised women.

Yet it is unclear whether Sarah Palin will rise and capitalize on women’s sentiments. Since her re-emergence on the public scene, she has done little to show herself as a woman who will stand up for women, as a self-described feminist in Going Rogue.

Palin has failed to endorse important women of the Republican Party, and is actively supporting numerous challengers to Democratic women incumbents. She has become outspoken in her antiabortion views, turning away from what was a key factor in making her one of the country’s most popular governors and the de facto leader of the Tea Party: letting the people decide.
Following the links provided by the author in her original post, we see that her perception of Sarah Palin having "failed to endorse important women" of the GOP is based solely on the former governor's endorsement of Rick Perry over Kay Baily Hutchison in the Texas GOP gubernatorial primary. That Sarah Palin has endorsed and will campaign for Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) -- who last time we checked was very much a woman -- doesn't seem to have been a factor in Ms. Siskind's reasoning at all. Nor does the fact that Hutchison lost the Texas primary primarily because she was never able to explain either why she was running for governor or why voters should have chosen her over Perry.

Ms. Siskind also criticizes Gov. Palin for "actively supporting numerous challengers to Democratic women incumbents." Well, excuse us for pointing out the obvious, but why should a mostly conservative Republican such as Sarah Palin not campaign against mostly liberal Democrats? File that one in the folder marked "Well, duh!"

The author also laments that Gov. Palin "has become outspoken in her antiabortion views," as if this is some recent turn of events. Sarah Palin has always been pro-life. She was pro-life as governor of Alaska, and she wasn't shy even as a candidate for mayor to let that fact be known. While it is true that she became an even more outspoken as an advocate for life after the birth of her youngest child, Trig, who has Down syndrome, that happened well before Amy Siskind ever wrote her first word about Sarah Palin.

Truth be told, Amy Siskind wants Sarah Palin to support female politicians simply because of their gender, with no weight given to the political philosophy which guides them. In the Siskind view, no other factor has any relevance. Sarah Palin is simply not as one-dimensional as is Ms. Siskind, a fact of life that the author can't seem to come to terms with.

Yes, it is indeed high time for our nation to elect a woman to the presidency, but not just because she is a woman. To vote for a woman simply based on gender is as wrong as voting for a person on the basis of race, even though it has also long been time for our nation to elect a president who happens to be a member of an ethnic minority. That so many people voted for Barack Obama for no reason other than his ethnicity has saddled our nation with a radically left-leaning administration which has been woefully ineffective in dealing with the problems that are hurting so many American families. One would think that someone as seemingly bright as Amy Siskind would have learned something from that lesson, but such is apparently not the case.
