Thousands picnic with Gov. Palin in Anchorage

Thousands of people showed up for Sarah Palin's last governor's picnic in Anchorage Saturday. Officials had planned for a crowd of 8,000. Sean Cockerham's ADN report is here, and KTUU's is here.

Here's some AP raw video from the event:

Bloggers for Sarah Palin's own Shane Vander Hart has dubbed this "Palin’s Liberation Weekend" and posted this at Caffeinated Thoughts. Tom Lamb posted this at It's a Kwazy Life. Adrienne (The Dallas Adrienne, not the NY Adrienne) has some good picnic pics posted at Sarah Palin 2012.

Crowd of 1,000+ turns out for Palin's Wasilla picnic

Dwarfing the numbers that traditionally show up for the governor's annual picnic in Wasilla, Alaska, more than a thousand people turned out Friday for Gov. Sarah Palin's last such event that she will host as governor in her hometown.

Some in the crowd came from as far away from Wasilla as Louisiana and Texas. Adrienne Ross, media director, New York State organizer and an executive board member of the 2012 Draft Sarah Committee was there, and she posted an after action report with lots of photos on her blog Motivation Truth here.

Alaskan Tammy Swofford was also there, and she blogged it (also with photos) here. Another Alaskan, June, who blogs at Sunhusky's Alaska, blogged with photos here. Ben Wargo, yet another Alaska transplant, blogged it here.

As for the legacy media, KTUU's story and video is here. KTVA's story is here. The AP story is here. Raw AP video of the governor signing autographs, serving hot dogs and mingling with the crowd is here. A video of her speech to the crowd is here.

After the picnic, the governor tweeted:
"Great 3rd(& final) Governor's Picnic in hometown tonite;loved the focus: honoring military&Blue Star families;no politickin' just patriotism"
Looking ahead to the Saturday and Sunday picnics, Gov. Palin sent this message:
"Tomrrw host Anch Gov's Picnic; LtGov Parnell/I love these events- literally getting to serve you! Then Sunday Frbnks Picnic/Transition speech"

Palin's governorship will end in Fairbanks where it began

As we reported a week ago, the annual governor’s picnic in Fairbanks has taken on a special significance thanks to Sarah Palin's announcement that she will hand over the governorship of Alaska to Sean Parnell at the July 26th event. The Sunday occasion will follow picnics in the Mat-Su Valley Friday evening and in Anchorage Saturday afternoon, with Gov. Palin expected to attend all three.

In addition to the crowd of 5,000 expected to turn our for the picnic, the media will be there in force. C-SPAN will be joined by a host of media outlets. According to Palin spokeswoman Sharon Leighow, CNN, C-SPAN and PBS will air the satellite feed of the Pioneer Park event from Anchorage television station KTUU. FOX News, ABC, Politico and others, will send national reporters to Alaska to provide coverage.

It's significant the the governor chose Fairbanks as the site to hand over the reigns of power to her lieutenant governor. She broke with tradition to choose Alaska's second largest city for her inaugural also.

Thousands expected at Governor's annual picnic

Organizers are planning for a turnout numbering in the thousands for the July 26 Alaska governor's annual picnic in Fairbanks, where Gov. Palin will officially resign her office and hand over their reigns of power to Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell.

According to the Associated Press, about 5,000 picnickers and a large press contingent are expected to attend the event, where "security will be tighter than usual" and media credentials will be checked."

As of July 12, says Gov. Palin communications director David Murrow, C-SPAN was the only media organization that had inquired of the governor's office about the event, but more news outlets are expected to contact him as the date approaches.
