Time to move on...

For six years, your editor has been a Freeper, an association I was once proud of. No more. The site has been going downhill for a long time, and it has finally lowered itself to a level I just can't abide. Some pretty reprehensible things have been posted on Free Republic -- some of it which got FR labeled a "hate site" -- but I simply chalked it up to the usual extremes of opinion one is likely to see on a forum. But then it began to get troublesome.
A small band of anti-Palin activists on FR just about had me ready to bail, but then one of them went too far with a very crude comment, and the site's owner, Jim Robinson, kicked him off. For a short while there, it seemed like the climate at Free Republic was improving. But then other troubling tends indicated things were just getting worse there. One of these is the dominance of the birthers at FR. The place has gone full birther. We've said it many times. Whether Barack Obama was born in Hawaii, Kenya, or on Planet Giedi Prime, the best way to make sure that he doesn't get four more years to destroy our nation is to hit him on pocketbook issues. "It's still the economy, stupid." Tilting at his birth certificate like so many windmills is simply too... well, quixotic, and the Obamunists just love it. That's time spent not holding the president accountable for the financial disaster he's fostering on everyday Americans, and it hands leftists the paintbrush they need to portray all conservatives as loonies.
A second small band (isn't it always a minority who screws things up for everyone else?) of Freepers have become prominent on the site. These people are the anti-bloggers. The anti-bloggers believe that bloggers should cross-post their op-eds in their entirety on FR if they post them there at all. As writers and publishers, our work is subject to the same copyright laws as articles published in other media, such as newspapers. We believe that if we share our work with FR, we should be allowed to publish excerpts. The anti-bloggers call us "blog pimps," even though many of us don't have much of a revenue stream for our sites. This blog has no paid blog ads, and regulars here can testify that I don't hit the readership up for donations often. We usually don't rattle the tip jar unless we have a crisis of some sort, such as when the old laptop died in December. If we're "blog pimps," then we're not very successful ones, as blogging is far from a lucrative undertaking. It's more of a labor of love.
As a rule, bloggers freely link to one another. Although there are a few who don't want to share either credit or readership, most of us don't mind driving traffic to the sites of other bloggers we feel are worthy of it. With our Quote of the Day and QOTD Honorable Mention posts, regular features of this site, we've provided thousands of links to other websites. That doesn't even take into account many more thousands of links in our other posts and in our sidebar. We've always felt that such link love generates a synergy of sorts which is good for bloggers on both ends of the hyperlink transaction. As JFK said, a rising tide lifts all boats. Although he was talking about an economic tide, the principle is the same.
What finally drove home the reality of the sad state of Free Republic was this post by Marc Schenker on Warner Todd Huston's Publius Forum. By way of disclosure, I used to be a contributor there, but I no longer post my articles at Publius'. Warner was an occasional contributor here, but he's apparently kept so busy by all of the other sites he writes for that he no longer posts here. I don't agree with everything Marc has to say in his post. I believe, for example, that he should not have played the victim card. Marc and other bloggers are not the victims of FR's slide down the pipes, but rather it is the cause of conservatism that suffers. We have other issues with his post, but Marc is right that FR sure ain't what it used to be. It has changed, and none for the better. The voice of reason is heard on FR with much less frequency these days than in the past.
It's a shame. Jim Robinson is pro-Palin himself, although he had allowed the Palin bashers free reign in his playground for a long time. Just as he tolerated the Palin-haters, we believed that he was just tolerating the blogger-haters. But Jim showed, by way of a comment on FR, that he shares their opinions of bloggers. Jim, it seems, considers whatever traffic is driven to FR by bloggers to be such small potatoes that bloggers don't deserve to have their copyrighted material treated as such by FR. The website has had copyright issues in the past, and as a result, there are several publications from which FR is prevented from even publishing excerpts. For a conservative website, FR's "what's yours is ours" attitude about copyrights and intellectual property rights is disturbingly "progressive." FR's hostility to bloggers comes right from the top. That's something we can't abide.
I personally do not want to be associated with FR any longer. I never thought the day would come when I didn't want to be a Freeper, but today is that day. I logged off of Free Republic for the last time. Some of the people who have been driven away from FR include Matt Drudge and Lucianne Goldberg. Talk show host Sean Hannity commented about Free Republic, "Everyone I knew basically left because of so much childish immature personal attacks, the propensity there to eat their own." So I figure I'm at least in good company. When it comes to pushing back against the left and its lies, don't Conservatives have enough on our plates to keep us busy without trying to eat our own?
Our policy here at Texas for Sarah Palin, as well our other sites -- The Book of Sarah, Blogs 4 Palin, and Brazos Valley Pundit -- remains unchanged. We will gladly cooperate with other blogs and bloggers if doing so is in our opinion positive for Gov. Palin and for the larger cause of Reagan conservatism as well. That includes the exchange of links, promotion of related worthy causes and events and special projects as well.

Welcome to the Palinosphere

We've just come across a new pro-Palin blog, Pennsylvania For Palin. It's so new that only the first couple of posts have been published, but we send our best wishes to the blogger for a long and successful run in the Palinosphere.
Along with Michiganders 4 Palin, Washington State 4 Sarah and of course our own Texas for Sarah Palin, we think the next big growth area of the Palinosphere will be blogs which will have, as part of their focus, support of Gov. Palin from the perspective of an individual state. That focus will become more apparent and more important as the 2008 GOP vice presidential candidate moves ever closer to announcing a run for president, when and if that day comes.
Right now, there's not a lot in the Palin orbit to blog about from the vantage point of a state, other than local public appearances by the governor. But an announcement of a Sarah Palin run for the White House would elevate the importance of organizing at the state, county and precinct level to the top of the priority list. That's when the state-focused Palin blogs will have plenty of news to report and a crucial role to play.
Three states down and forty-seven to go, plus a few territories. Let's roll.

Lessons in Blogging

There are lessons in blogging here and here. Some of the lessons may not be quite the same ones as the instructor had in mind:
When you stand up for Sarah Palin and respond to unfair attacks on her with a point-by-point discussion of issues, don't expect a rebuttal in kind. Rather, expect an attack on your character, just like Sarah Palin's character has been attacked. Also expect the attacker to cloak the attack with words to the effect of, "now I'm not suggesting you are any of these things, but I've been told these things about you."
Your attacker will also attack your blog, call it a "fan" blog and hold you accountable for all of the comments your readers make on your site. Just because you support a particular candidate or potential candidate, you are a fan, not a supporter who made the decision to support a political figure based on that person's record and good character, as well as his or her stated and demonstrated positions on the issues.
Call us whatever names you wish to. Attack our character, and attack our blogs. It will not deter us from responding to attacks on Sarah Palin which we consider to be unfair. When we see them, if we have the time and resources to do so, we will call out those who make such attacks.
Sometimes a little good can come from a bad situation. In times past, Texas for Sarah Palin and Conservatives 4 Palin haven't always been on the same chapter and verse. While we share many of the same goals, we have taken different paths to try to accomplish them. There have been some arguments and strained relations between the two blogs.
But over the more recent months, the two blogs have been moving closer to one another. It began when we put our differences aside and cooperated in a common fundraising effort for Gov. Palin's defense fund. More recently, we have exchanged links and each website has begun to acknowledge some of the posts which have been published on the other.
With the recent attacks on both TX4P and C4P, I stand in solidarity with my colleagues at C4P. Both blogs have been fierce defenders and supporters of Sarah Palin. From now on, when C4P or any other Palin support blog is attacked in an unfair manner, I will rise in support of that blog, blogger and contributors.
Perhaps the best thing to come out of this entire dustup is that it serves as a reminder that Palin and Palin-friendly bloggers have a golden opportunity to at last become a true community of websites which will focus on those things that unite us rather than those which divide us.
We don't enjoy engaging in blogwar with any bloggers with whom we share common beliefs, common principles. So this will be my final words on the latest dustup. I agree that we all have more productive things to do with our time and our websites. As a step in that direction, I will accept that responsibility for the comments readers make on my blog. I am removing all comments from recent posts which only served to escalate the war of words. Perhaps other steps can be taken, and perhaps we can all ratchet down the hostility. I hope that we can all move on to what should be our common purpose -- defeating the radical leftists who have taken over one major political party, are working to manipulate the other major party and to transform this nation we all love into what is the antithesis of the republic the founders sacrificed all they had to establish.

Palin. Ask anyone who has spent a lot of time around Todd and Sarah Palin, and they will tell you that the "Splitville" rumors started and spread by lying hate bloggers are just that -- lies. Welcome to the Palinosphere
A new Sarah Palin blog has made its appearance - God, Guts, & Sarah Palin. There are about fifty or so active Palin blogs (and a bunch of inactive ones). Plus, there are many more websites devoted to Gov. Palin - fora, information sites, support sites, etc.
You can find a list of them (the ones I know about, at least) at The Book of Sarah in the right-hand column.
People can't get enough of our favorite governor, and that makes the Palin-haters' heads tend to explode.

Draft Sarah Palin, unhappy with Gov. Bobby Jindal for saying that Dick Cheney should stop criticizing President Obama, concludes that Gov. Sarah Palin "is the spokesperson for the Republican Party."
The Brickyard liked last night's speech and the governor's delivery of it: "If this Sarah continues to show up, we are well on our way to eliminating the negativity of the campaign - and charging toward a Palin presidency."
Let's Get It Right posted Gov. Palin's press release on some recent board appointments. One appointee, Nicholas Henderson to the Alaska Community Services Commission, is a Iraq War vet. It's no surprise that the governor walks the walk on hiring our Iraq and Afganistan veterans , but she deserves kudos for it nevertheless.
Alaska Governor Sarah Palin's Accomplishments has commentary on last night's speech by Sarah Palin, judging the address as "one of the Governor's most beautiful speeches."
HolyCoast.com sums the speech up succinctly, "She walked the walk."
RunSarah2012 says, "It never ceases to amaze me that the Sarah Palin take down effort can always sink to newer depths of slime and vitriol."

A Few Thoughts on Hate and Negativism
I sometimes wonder what it must be like to be a Shannyn Moore, a Dan Fagan, a Celtic Diva or a member of their crews. I can't visualize it in my mind, because I don't harbor such vile hatred in my heart. In my "come to Jesus" moment years ago, I learned that any amount of hate in the heart only serves to poison the soul. So I work real hard on easing the burden by getting rid of as much of it as I can manage. The Lord taught us to do this, and I believe it is the most difficult task He has charged us with.
As a blogger, I have asked myself how can anyone spend every minute of every day going all negative on someone - even a politician - with whom that blogger disagrees? All that negativity weighs heavily upon the soul. I know this, because I once tried to do it, but I failed. Yes, I tried my hand at doing an Obama oppo site, not because I hated the man, but because the prospect of a socialist at the helm of this nation scared the dickens out of me. Even though he supports the grisly practice of abortion which destroys human life, I don't hate him. I pray for him. I ask the good Lord above to shine a light for him and show him the error of his ways. Anyway, I had to abandon the project because working on it was making me miserable.
The amount of I time I have to spend railing against the Energizer bunnies of negativism who are in attack-Sarah-Palin mode 24/7 could be better spent blogging about what I am for rather than what I'm against. But defending the governor and her family requires a great deal of it. As it is, I find it tiring, but it must be done, because the dark side forces are tireless. If I had to spend 100% of my time doing it, I would find it exhausting, not to mention troubling at best.
It would be a terrible thing to have to live with, being a hateful, negative person who spends ever minute online, every stroke on the keyboard, trying to destroy another person or persons. I can't conceive of what a load it would be bear false witness against that person and lash out at her children. "For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?"
