Alicia Colon: Rethinking Sarah Palin For President

In the digital edition of The Irish Examiner USA, Alicia Colon admits that while she has been an admirer of Sarah Palin, she had never taken Gov. Palin seriously as a 2012 presidential candidate. Ms/ Colon was one of those who was lulled by the media sirens into relegating the 2008 vice presidential candidate to the role of kingmaker. But ironically, the same media's attacks on the governor caused the author to reevaluate Sarah Palin as a potential president. The final straw for Ms. Colon was when Canadian TV columnist John Doyle slammed the television series "Sarah Palin's Alaska" in the Globe and Mail:

I didn't watch the entire Palin series but the ones I did watch left me with the impression that Sarah Palin represented the American woman we rarely get to see in the media-strong, independent and proud to be a mother. Mr. Doyle found this last image so offensive, he had to mock it because what mainstream media anchorwoman touts that familial connection? Fox News on the other hand has its anchorwomen proudly blooming on air throughout their pregnancies and not hiding their womanhood.

I also came away with a wishful thought about how wonderful it would be for our country to be represented by such a strong, vibrant woman who clearly loves this nation. I felt the same as a teenager when John F. Kennedy emerged as a presidential candidate and the nation was overwhelmed by his youth, charisma and beautiful family. We knew very little then about Kennedy's negatives and if the Internet had been around in 1960, it's doubtful he would have been elected. Conversely, we know everything about Sarah Palin and despite the distortion and lies about her character, what we see is what we get and frankly that honesty is what we need right now.

Her record shows that she would not be burdening the American people with a multi-trillion dollar budget that would bankrupt the country. Her recent interview with Greta Van Susteren proved her to be a realistic and sympathetic observer of the difficulty Israel faces on a daily basis. Unlike our president who leans more towards the UN condemnation of that harried nation, Palin asked the question Israelis have been asking for decades: "Why is it that in the past, too often, the U.S. government has told Israel that they're the ones, the Jewish community, that they need to back up, they need to back off or there will never be peace? They need to keep conceding? Why aren't we putting our foot down with the other side and telling the Palestinians, if you're serious about peace, quit the shellacking and the shelling, quit the bombing of innocent Israelis. Look at the young Israeli family that was slaughtered in their house a week or two ago. Look at today, the bombing of those innocents at a bus station in Jerusalem."

This is not a dumb woman. This is an extremely competent and courageous woman whom I'd vote for in a nanosecond as my Commander-in-Chief. Dream ticket-Palin/Rubio.

The more the media attacks her, the more we get to hear her intelligent and self-assured responses debunking them all - and all without a teleprompter. No wonder they hate her.

What Alicia Colon Doesn't Like About Sarah Palin

The author of this Irish Examiner opinion piece eventually admits that her title was conceived to snare Palin-haters into reading her pro-Sarah article. Once lured into her clever trap, Ms. Colon hits them with both barrels:

I can't recall in my long life so many Hollywood and television celebrities opining so fiercely about a political candidate as the following did on Sarah Palin: Matt Damon, Robin Williams, Whoopi Goldberg, Bill Maher, Chevy Chase, Lindsay Lohan, Susan Sarandon, and many, many more. Then of course there was Tina Fey on Saturday Night Live whose line, "I see Russia from my window," was falsely attributed to Palin.

Most of these intellectually challenged celebs have based their negative opinions on Palin on falsely attributed quotes that were generated by a satiric blog- www.unbearablebobness.typepad.com.

This site claimed that Palin's church believes that dinosaurs were on earth 4,000 years ago and that Palin does not believe in evolution. The blogger then wrote "Disclaimer: She didn't actually say these things - I made them up. But thanks for all the visits."

The fake stories persist along with the criticism that Palin is not very bright which is laughable. Matt Damon may have played a genius in the film, Good Will Hunting, but I doubt he's accomplished as much as Sarah Palin.

Alaskans share in the oil revenue and that state is one the richest in the nation with a huge surplus in its treasury.

Each Alaska resident gets an annual rebate from state oil revenue, and in 2008 Palin added $1,200 more to the $2,100 check each person received.

Contrast that efficiency to the state of California where most of these celebrities live and is nearing bankruptcy.

So what is it that Ms. Colon does not like about Gov. Palin? She thinks Mama Bear tends to growl a bit too loudly at Tea Party events. Otherwise, the author writes, Sarah Palin is "absolutely magnificent."

Alicia Colon on The Importance of Sarah Palin

Alicia Colon, author of a biography of Cindy McCain, has written an opinion piece on the importance of Sarah Palin, published by the Irish Examiner. A few excerpts:

Mrs. Palin is proof positive that a woman can have it all without sacrificing her core principles and moral integrity. She's a beautiful person with a dreamy supportive husband and the mother of five who refused to abort her Down Syndrome child, unlike so many of her female critics. All in all, that makes her a dangerous post-feminist example.

This disconnect from Middle America is what drives the insane misreading of Mrs. Palin by a fanatically ignorant liberal elite. Everything that she's done makes perfect sense to anyone not blinded by intense resentment. It's most interesting reading the comments on articles in leftwing blogs such as Salon.com that surprisingly dare to defend her. Disappointed readers make a point of calling Mrs. Palin a coward for leaving her term as governor midstream, but they're off-target. They choose to ignore that Alaska was being inundated with frivolous lawsuits against her.

They also dismiss the dire state of our country, which has been going downhill ever since Barack Obama was elected, and that the only way to stop our slide into socialism is for people to get their facts outside the mainstream media. There's no way Mrs. Palin could have used her growing political influence effectively while remaining in office. Freed from the restrictions of public service, she's been able to tour the country and support causes and candidates that reflect her principles.

Other critical comments charge that Mrs. Palin is in it for the money, promoting her book from state to state, but they too miss the mark. Gee, isn't that how Bill and Hillary Clinton attained their multi-millionaire status? Al Gore became the first climate-change billionaire, thanks to his discredited film, "An Inconvenient Truth," but no one on the left's complaining.
