Palin to walk for autism; NY profs say trip political

As we learn that Gov. Sarah Palin will participate in a third event in New York State this weekend, two Empire State college professors have expressed their doubts that the 2008 GOP candidate's weekend in their state is anything but nonpolitical.

We've already reported that Gov. Palin will spend Saturday in Auburn, NY to help the town celebrate what organizers call Founders Day, as well as the 50th anniversary of Alaska's statehood. Then Sunday on Long Island, the governor will be honored by the Independent Group Home Living Foundation for her support of families who have children with special needs.

Add another event to her Sunday schedule. Autism Speaks is sponsoring its Walk Now for Autism Awareness and Fundraising Event Sunday, June 7, and Gov. Palin is scheduled to participate, according to the organization. In fact, the group's press release says:
"Governor Palin will walk alongside her sister, Heather Bruce, and her nephew, who is on the autism spectrum."
The walk begins at 11:00 AM at Manhattanville College in Purchase, NY, located in Westchester County. After the walk, it's on to St. James in Suffolk County to receive the IGHL award.

Even though two of the three events Gov. Palin is participating in this weekend are charity functions, SUNY Cortland political science professor Robert Spitzer says Governor Palin's visit to New York State is about politics:
"I think there is a vacuum in the Republican Party," Spitzer said, "and she's very ambitious. I don't mean that as criticism. I just mean that we learned during the 2008 campaign that she had an idea of higher elective office before she was selected as McCain's vice presidential running mate."
Robert McClure, Chapel Family Professor of Citizenship and Democracy at Syracuse University's Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, agrees. He says the former Republican vice presidential candidate's trip continues a political tradition that began with Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, who took what they described as "botanical trips" through New England to strengthen their political bases:
"Palin is doing nothing more than what 200 years of American politics would predict. ... If she has political ambitions, and I presume she does, then she's got to find ways to make herself known and to learn about a very big country."
Whatever the governor's motives, no one can dispute that by lending her name and her presence to charitable events, she is doing a great deal to help them meet their goals, which is laudable. If she makes new friends and wins political support by so doing, then TX4P says, "Godspeed, Gov. Palin."

  1. She's also helping to raise funds for the Seward House in Auburn. The last story I read was that the $250 tickets to that event have sold out. For that price you get to meet Gov. Palin and have your picture taken with her. There are some $100 tickets left, but I'll bet they are sold out by starting time.

Let's see, Evansville was also a fundraising event, Seward House, Austism walk, IGHL, 4 fundraising events for worthy causes. When she was in Evansville, the local GOP offered to arrange a SarahPAC fundraiser, but she turned them down.

The NRSC wanted her to go to their fundraiser on June 8th (Monday), but when she said she'd have to wait 2 weeks and respond after the legislative session, they got mad, disinvited her, and went with Gingrich. I'll bet it irks them that she will be doing 3 fundraising events this weekend and they're stuck listening to Gingrich as if they couldn't do that any night of the week by just turning on FOX.

*eye roll* They're still so condescending towards her. She stumped over half the country last year. She's not a freakin' shut in. Keep underestimating her boys and girls...
